Sitka Blacktail Deer
Alaska's Sitka Blacktail Deer is one of the smallest
of the North American deer species. In spite of it's smallness,
it is a strong hardy animal that is native to the wet, coastal
rainforests of Southeast Alaska. They are now well established
on up into Prince William Sound and on the Islands of Kodiak
and Afognak. A large buck generally weighs around 150 to 190
pounds and has antlers that are rather small but normally
having 3 or 4 points per side. During the Summer months the
Sitka Blacktail will primarily be found in the higher elevations
in open alpine country. As the weather cools and the heavy
frosts hit the slopes the Deer begin a downward migration
into the trees and brush on the lower slopes. The rut begins
in late October and peaks in mid November. The winter snows
normally arrive during this time period and the Deer move
lower, eventually concentrating in a narrow band adjacent
to the beaches where the canopy of trees and brush give some
protection resulting in a decreased snow depth. These conditions
are prefect and provide a prime opportunity for a great Sitka
Blacktail Deer hunting experience. With the Deer concentrated
near the beaches the Hunting Vessel will be situated
in areas with a lot of Deer activity. Often a good buck will
be seen through the picture windows and then the guide and
hunter take the skiff to the beach to begin their stalk. Day
hikes are also very effective and produce some great trophies.
Some guides like to use this method of hunting as it gives
them a chance to use their Deer calls. It can lead to success,
however more than a few have been successful in calling in
more than Deer. The hunters have had the thrill, or was it
panic, of a seeing a big Kodiak Brown Bear at close range.
Some of our hunting range for Sitka Blacktail Deer is in
an area that is also home to a small herd of Roosevelt
Elk. For those hunters that want to add this trophy to
your collection it is sometimes possible to hunt this animal
at the same time. Let us know well in advance so that arrangements
can be made to secure a permit.
Hunting from a comfortable vessel is simply great!
You can shoot more than one buck and enjoy a lot of other
hunting activity for Red Fox, Cross Fox, Sea Ducks, Ptarmigan
